Now, in a new blockbuster, Gerritsen melds page-turning suspense with chilling realism as a small-town doctor races to unravel the roots of a violent outbreak -- before it destroys everything she loves. Lapped by he gentle waters of Locust Lake, the small resort town of Tranquility, Maine, seems like the perfect spot for Dr. Claire Elliot to shelter her adolescent son, Noah, from the distractions of the big city and the lingering memory of his father's death. But with the first snap of winter comes shocking news that puts her practise on the line: a teenage boy under her care has committed an appalling act of violence. And as Claire and all of Tranquility soon discover, it is just the start of a chain of lethal outbursts among the town's teenagers. As the rash of disturbing behavior grows, Claire uncovers a horrifying secret: this is not the first time it has happened. Twice a century, the children of Tranquility lash out with deadly violence. Claire suspects that there is a biological cause for the epidemic, and she fears that the placid Locust Lake may conceal an insidious danger. As she races to save Tranquility -- and her son -- from harm, Claire discovers an even greater threat: a shocking conspiracy to manipulate nature, and turn innocents to slaughter.

The Department of Health introduced a target to reduce MRSA across all NHS trusts by 50 per cent by 2008 and C. difficile by 30 per cent by 2010-11. MRSA had been reduced by 57 per cent by the end of March 2008 and C. difficile by 41 per cent. While a quarter of trusts have reduced MRSA by more than 80 per cent, in 12 per cent of trusts there has been an increase in MRSA infections. Twenty-nine per cent of trusts have reduced C. difficile by more than 50 per cent, but in 19 per cent of hospital trusts the numbers of C. difficile infections have increased. Since the introduction of the targets, the Department has spent some £120 million tackling healthcare associated infections. There have also been unquantifiable administrative costs and local expenditure on the drive to reduce infection rates. These initiatives have led to savings on treatment of between £141 million and £263 million, as well as reducing discomfort, disability and, for some, death that might have been caused by these avoidable infections. There has also been a perceptible change in trust leadership on tackling infections. The impact has not, however, been the same in all trusts or for other infections. Following the Department's intervention to improve recording on death certificates where MRSA or C. difficile was the underlying cause or a contributory factor, in 2007 around 9,000 people were reported as having died in such circumstances. There is still no national information on deaths from other healthcare associated infections such as urinary tract infections and pneumonia and blood stream infections due to other causes may be increasing.

The purpose of this book is to help nurses, midwives and healthprofessionals to better understand how the work of clinicallaboratories contributes to patient care. It answers thefollowing questions: Why is this test being ordered on my patient? What sort of sample is required? How is that sample obtained? And most importantly: What is the significance of the test result for mypatient? Retaining its accessible and user-friendly style, the aim ofthis book remains the same: to provide nurses with as much relevantinformation as possible about the most commonly requestedlaboratory rests. This is not a book about laboratory technique -its focus is on the clinical significance of test results, andtherefore the patient. The third edition is morecomprehensive in terms of the number of testsdiscussed, incorporates colour to aid the accessibility, and includes more paediatric content.
