English summary: This is a thorough investigation of the passages about Jesus in the rabbinic literature, mainly in the Babylonian Talmud. In his lucid and accessible book, Peter Schafer examines how the rabbis read and used the New Testament to assert Judaism's superiority over Christianity. The Talmudic texts focus on the virgin birth of Jesus, his behavior as a bad and frivolous disciple, his teachings, the healing capacities Jesus and his disciples possessed, the execution of Jesus and his disciples, and finally his punishment forever in hell. The center of this critique of Jesus and his fate was Babylonia under Sassanian rule, quite in contrast to Palestinian Judaism, which was increasingly threatened by the dominant power of Christianity. Joachim Jeska in Biblische Zeitschrift 52 (2008), S. 297-298

In this text for upper-beginner and intermediate students, Brian Beyer collects authentic Latin prose from Book I of Eutropius's Breviarium ab urbe condita, which covers Roman history from its foundation to the sack of Rome by the Gauls. Eutropius's easy style and accessible vocabulary make his Breviarium ideal for students transitioning from the simplified Latin of a first-year textbook. Bottom-of-the-page glosses, passages in English from the Roman historian Livy, a running commentary on grammar and syntax, historical notes, and compiled vocabulary allow students insight into the foundational myths of ancient Rome and the historical context of Eutropius's narrative.

This collection of ancillary Latin narrative passages is intended to supplement the Cambridge Latin Course, and can be used to provide extra practice in translation and/or comprehension, or to provide material for evaluation purposes on tests and examinations. The stories have served both purposes in the classes for which they have been composed over the last 20 years. The Cambridge Latin Course is successful in its avowed aim to prepare students to read and understand Latin, mainly because its stories are so interesting that students want to be able to read them. That success, however, poses a challenge to the teacher/evaluator. To measure a student's successing in achieving the Course's primary aim, the student has to be asked to translate or answer comprehension questions "at sight" on a connected passage of Latin. The Fabulae Ancillantes answer this need, providing passages that are in line with the Cambridge Latin Course, yet are new to the student.
