Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing is the essential manual of metalpoint technique, written by Susan Schwalb and Tom Mazzullo, contemporary masters of the medium. This book is the first treatise on the subject for artists and art teachers with chapters on early history, materials including grounds, supports, metals, and tools, techniques for working in metalpoint as well as mixed media, and finally, the care of metalpoint works. Not only beautifully illustrated, this book also demonstrates how to photograph and exhibit metalpoint art. Featuring a gallery of drawings by contemporary artists, along with their tips and insight, Silverpoint and Metalpoint Drawing is a perfect introduction for students of the medium and an inspiration for those already more familiar with it.

The Long Lives of Medieval Art and Architecture

Traditional histories of medieval art and architecture often privilege the moment of a work’s creation, yet surviving works designated as "medieval" have long and expansive lives. Many have extended prehistories emerging from their sites and contexts of creation, and most have undergone a variety of interventions, including adaptations and restorations, since coming into being. The lives of these works have been further extended through historiography, museum exhibitions, and digital media. Inspired by the literary category of biography and the methods of longue durée historians, the introduction and seventeen chapters of this volume provide an extended meditation on the longevity of medieval works of art and the aspect of time as a factor in shaping our interpretations of them. While the metaphor of "lives" invokes associations with the origin of the discipline of art history, focus is shifted away from temporal constraints of a single human lifespan or generation to consider the continued lives of medieval works even into our present moment. Chapters on works from the modern countries of Italy, France, England, Spain, and Germany are drawn together here by the thematic threads of essence and continuity, transformation, memory and oblivion, and restoration. Together, they tell an object-oriented history of art and architecture that is necessarily entangled with numerous individuals and institutions.

A gloriously illustrated examination of the origins and development of the nude as an artistic subject in Renaissance Europe Reflecting an era when Europe looked to both the classical past and a global future, this volume explores the emergence and acceptance of the nude as an artistic subject. It engages with the numerous and complex connotations of the human body in more than 250 artworks by the greatest masters of the Renaissance. Paintings, sculptures, prints, drawings, illuminated manuscripts, and book illustrations reveal private, sometimes shocking, preoccupations as well as surprising public beliefs—the Age of Humanism from an entirely new perspective. This book presents works by Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, and Martin Schongauer in the north and Donatello, Raphael, and Giorgione in the south; it also introduces names that deserve to be known better. A publication this rich in scholarship could only be produced by a variety of expert scholars; the sixteen contributors are preeminent in their fields and wide-ranging in their knowledge and curiosity. The structure of the volume—essays alternating with shorter texts on individual artworks—permits studies both broad and granular. From the religious to the magical and the poetic to the erotic, encompassing male and female, infancy, youth, and old age, The Renaissance Nude examines in a profound way what it is to be human.

This book, a new translation (with introduction and notes) of Il Libro dell'Arte, marks a great step forward in our understanding of Cennino Cennini - his life and times - and the materials and techniques employed by artists in fourteenth century Italy. Over eighty years ago, D. V. Thompson presented his translation entitled The Craftsman's Handbook as a workshop manual aimed at readers who wished to produce a work of art by following Cennino's instructions. The present volume not only establishes more precisely what Cennino actually wrote, by correcting more than 400 errors in Thompson's text, but also includes the transcribed Italian text and very extensive notes on both the language and the technical descriptions. In addition, the author's most informative introduction places Cennino in context and accounts for the genesis of the libro dell'arte by reference to the society in which it was produced. This volume is a landmark text for students and professionals in the field of art history. Contents: Foreword; Acknowledgements; Introduction; Why a new translation?; Who was Cennino Cennini?; What is the Libro dell'arte?; The transmission and translation of the Libro dell'arte; Notes on the transcription; Notes on the translation; Il libro dell'arte: English translation and commentary and Italian transcription; Notes on substantive differences from Thompson's translation; Appendix; Bibliography.

This volume is a lavishly illustrated invitation to contemplate the intricacy of religious paintings charting the course of Tuscan painting after Giotto. Around 1400, Cennino Cennini in his Libro dell'Arte defined the art of painting as a product of imagination and craft, a text that gave rise to an exhibition focusing on the tradition of painting through the generations from Giotto, his pupil Taddeo Gaddi, the son of the latter, Agnolo, and finally Cennini himself. The catalogue also contains numerous essays on Cennini's book and his opinion on art-related matters, as well as on technological analyses of the paintings themselves. German text.

In 1350, the Italian humanist and poet Francesco Petrarca decided to form a collection of all his correspondence. The letters deal with multifarious topics, switch between narration and instruction, the personal and the general, and are addressed to various of his learned friends and contemporaries. Theyconstitute a treasure trove for the history of ideas. This is the first complete German-language edition of the famous 24 books of the Epistolae familiares; they have been translated from the Latin by Prof. Berthe Widmer, an acknowledged authority on Petrarch. The translation is accompanied by a detailed commentary on the texts, giving factual information on aspects which are largely unknown today, for example on persons, authors and places mentioned. Access to the letters is further facilitated by an annotated index of the addressees and an overview of the contents of the letters. A detailed introduction locates the letters in the context of Petrarch's complete works and his age. The letters represent a most important document in the history of literature and are of inestimable value for all literary scholars and historiansas well as forhistorians of philosophy.
