A mathematical guide to understanding why life can seem to be one big coincidence-and why the odds of just about everything are better than we would think. What are the chances? This is the question we ask ourselves when we encounter the strangest and most seemingly impossible coincidences, like the woman who won the lottery four times or the fact that Lincoln's dreams foreshadowed his own assassination. But, when we look at coincidences mathematically, the odds are a lot better than any of us would have thought. In Fluke, mathematician Joseph Mazur takes a second look at the seemingly improbable, sharing with us an entertaining guide to the most surprising moments in our lives. He takes us on a tour of the mathematical concepts of probability, such as the law of large numbers and the birthday paradox, and combines these concepts with lively anecdotes of flukes from around the world. How do you explain finding your college copy of Moby Dick in a used bookstore on the Seine on your first visit to Paris? How can a jury be convinced beyond a reasonable doubt that DNA found at the scene of a heinous crime did not get there by some fluke? Should we be surprised if strangers named Maria and Francisco, seeking each other in a hotel lobby, accidentally meet the wrong Francisco and the wrong Maria, another pair of strangers also looking for each other? As Mazur reveals, if there is any likelihood that something could happen, no matter how small, it is bound to happen to someone at some time. In Fluke, Mazur offers us proof of the inevitability of the sublime and the unexpected. He has written a book that will appeal to anyone who has ever wondered how all of the tiny decisions that happen in our lives add up to improbable wholes. A must-read for math enthusiasts and storytellers alike, Fluke helps us to understand the true nature of chance.

Poetry. Art. Mail Art. Collaboration between Michael Peters & John M. Bennett. These Illuminations were created between 2001 and 2015. They could be called Visual Poems or Visual Stories or Art or Totemic Screens, or something else entirely. To create them, something like five "starts"—a few letters or an image or a rubber stamp or some combination thereof—were sent out in the mail (the first nine were done together at an artist's residency), and when these were added to by the receiving collaborator, the same five "Fluke Illuminations" were sent back to the original sender along with five new Fluke "starts." Materials in this overlapping process include alphabetic stamps, graphite pencils, colored pencils, rubber stamps, typewriters, handwriting, newspaper and magazine images, black ink, magic markers, and both acrylic paint and white exterior house paint. The result is a stunningly beautiful body of work that will repay many revisitings. John M. Bennett has published over 400 books and media materials of poetry, visual poetry, and other matters. He writes/creates in English, Spanish, and other languages; is editor and publisher, with his wife, the Fluxus artist C. Mehrl Bennett, of Luna Bisonte Prods, and is Curator of the Avant Writing Collection at the Ohio state University Libraries. Recent books include LA M AL (2015), VERTICAL SLEEP (2015), MIRRORS MÁSCARAS (2014), THE STICKY SUIT WHIRS: LOS PREOLVIDADOS (2013), OLVIDOS (2013), and BLOCK (2012). Michael Peters is the author of the sound- imaging work VAAST BIN (Calamari Press, 2007) and other assorted language art and sound works. The book VAAST BIN, which is part of a larger Vaast Bin Project, is also available through SPD. As certain as he is uncertain of access to "the real," Peters frequently tests this periphery in the guise of a poet, a visual poet, a fictioneer, and a musician in a variety of old and new media.

President Harding’s young mistress narrates her life in the shadows of political corruption in this historical novel “of considerable dash and charm” (Publishers Weekly, starred review). President Warren G. Harding was a strikingly handsome man with little political ambition. But in the United States, anyone can be president—especially during the chicanery of the Roaring Twenties. At the center of his presidency was the young Nan Britton. Although she was only half his age, their passionate affair began in 1917 in a New York hotel room, and continued for six and a half years during his time in the Senate and then in the White House. Harding and Britton kept the affair secret, meeting in closets and private offices, including a small anteroom in the West Wing. Eventually, they conceived a daughter, Elizabeth Ann, born in October 1919. Fluke is a story of corruption, obsessive love, a doomed presidency, and the lengths a woman will go to support the man she loves. Before Lucy Mercer, Kay Summersby, and Monica Lewinsky, there was Nan Britton, whose stories of carnal adventures in the White House coat closet scandalized the nation.

On March 3, 2012 Rush Limbaugh, host of the popular conservative talk radio program The Rush Limbaugh Show, issued an online apology for comments made on air on from February 29 through March 2 in which he famously referred to Georgetown University law student Sandra Fluke as a "slut" and a "prostitute". Limbaugh's comments came several days after Fluke was denied an opportunity to speak at a congressional hearing to discuss a provision in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), that would require employer-issued insurance plans to cover contraceptive medications. Fluke was later invited to speak at an unofficial Democratic hearing on the subject and her testimony was cited during a Senate debate on the proposed Blunt Amendment which would allow employers to opt out of the health care law's contraception provision.

Jeffery Donaldson’s Fluke Print reflects on chance occurrences, on quiet, familiar scenes and impressions—prints, if you will—in which ‘Each word’s a wake that, glancing, folds aside / in parting phrases, under a furrowed brow, / then opens into passing stillnesses...’ His is a poetic world in which myth and memory are fitting counterparts to science and knowledge; in which pain, passion, and patience are equally worthy sources of inspiration; in which space and time are relative concepts, illusions of each other, points of intersection on a continuum that is vast and may, in the end, be unknowable. In Fluke Print, Donaldson invites readers to don the mantle of a man filled with questions and doubt, to approach the cagey, skittish muse, to conjugate the moods of selfhood and to seek apprenticeship to a great scholar of being.

In 2012 a Southern right whale gave birth to a calf in Sydney Harbour. It was only the third time in recorded history that a Southern right whale had been born in the harbour, and the people of Sydney were entranced. The story of Fluke is based on these events. In 2012 a Southern right whale gave birth to a calf in Sydney Harbour. The mother and calf stayed in the sheltered waters of the city's inlets and bays for several months before heading south to the Antarctic waters. The people of Sydney were entranced by the presence of these whales so close to the city. Since then there have been numerous other sightings of whale calves in Sydney waters, including one which was found nestling next to a boat after being separated from its mother. Lesley Gibbes' text captures the excitement, joy and awe that the presence of these magnificent mammals create among the citizens of Sydney, while Michelle Dawson's tender illustrations bring the character of Fluke and his rich underwater world to life.
