'Albertine is an exquisite rose. For a short, rampant period in spring, she puts out mouth-watering apricot-pink flowers. But her name signifies the unbearable: the likelihood that you are being deceived.' At thirty, Emily King is no ingenue, but when she takes a job as a French tutor and meets Lewis Lincoln, a handsome and charismatic professor many years her senior, she falls for him with foolish haste. As Emily guides her students through the work of Balzac, Flaubert and her beloved Proust, life and literature connect in unexpected ways, foreshadowing disturbing discoveries to come. Emily gradually comes to understand how little she knows about her evasive new lover and they are drawn irresistibly towards a devastating and utterly unpredictable climax. Armstrong's style is wry and amusing, but it has a sinister undertone. The French Tutor is a compelling, clever romance, a tightly drawn psychological thriller-and a cautionary tale about the dangers of loving too much and too quickly.

A single day in Paris changes the lives of three Americans as they each set off to explore the city with a French tutor, learning about language, love, and loss as their lives intersect in surprising ways. Josie, Riley, and Jeremy have come to the City of Light for different reasons: Josie, a young high school teacher, arrives in hopes of healing a broken heart. Riley, a spirited but lonely expat housewife, struggles to feel connected to her husband and her new country. And Jeremy, the reserved husband of a renowned actress, is accompanying his wife on a film shoot, yet he feels distant from her world. As they meet with their tutors—Josie with Nico, a sensitive poet; Riley with Phillippe, a shameless flirt; and Jeremy with the consummately beautiful Chantal—each succumbs to unexpected passion and unpredictable adventures. Yet as they traverse Paris’s grand boulevards and intimate, winding streets, they uncover surprising secrets about one another—and come to understand long-buried truths about themselves. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Ellen Sussman's Paradise Guest House.

This collection, the author's first, takes slippages in language as a starting point to explore gaps within the self, between the self and the world of others and everyday objects, as well as faultlines within the body politic. The encounter with a foreign tongue becomes an occasion for both loss of self and opening into otherness; the attempt to gain a hold on things by writing them down proves ominously fleeting. At turns playful and sober, French Lessons does not bring us Paris cityscapes or villages in Provence, but rather meditates on the lingering power of the foreign to challenge and transform the familiar.

This is the second of two companion volumes which examine language use and language attitudes in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Russia, focusing on the transitional period from the Enlightenment to the age of Pushkin. Set against the background of the rapid transformation of Russia into a major European power, the two volumes of French and Russian in Imperial Russia consider the functions of multilingualism and the use of French as a prestige language among the elite, as well as the benefits of Franco-Russian bilingualism and the anxieties to which it gave rise. This second volume, Language Attitudes and Identity, explores the impact of French on Russian language attitudes, especially among the literary community. It examines the ways in which perceptions of Russian francophonie helped to shape social, political and cultural identity as Russia began to seek space of its own in the European cultural landscape. In the process, it investigates approaches to translation, journalistic debate about language, literary representation of devotees of French social practice and fashion, and manifestations of linguistic purism and patriotism.A comprehensive and original contribution to the multidisciplinary study of language, the two volumes address, from a historical viewpoint, subjects of relevance to sociolinguists (especially bilingualism and multilingualism), social and cultural historians (social and national identity, linguistic and cultural borrowing), Slavists (the relationship of Russian and western culture) and students of the European Enlightenment, Neo-Classicism, Romanticism and cultural nationalism.

Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a prolific Scottish poet and historical novelist who was one of the most popular romantic novelists of the nineteenth century. After studying law at Edinburgh University, Scott first started writing at the age of 25. Having made his name as a poet, he wrote the phenomenally successful novel Waverley in 1814 and was made a baronet in 1820. These volumes, first published in 1827, contain Scott's detailed biography of Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821). Including a detailed review of the French Revolution, Scott focuses on Napoleon's legacy to France and his military genius, purposefully remaining non-partisan and discussing Napoleon's life and achievements without bias. The result of extensive research and correspondence with Napoleon's surviving colleagues, these volumes were extremely successful and remain valuable for the study of Napoleon's life and changing public reaction. Volume 8 covers 1813-1815, including the Battle of Waterloo.
