This guide provides a full range of updated, evidence-based norms and standards that will enable health care providers to give high quality care during pregnancy, delivery and in the postpartum period, considering the needs of the mother and her newborn baby. All recommendations are for skilled attendants working at the primary level of health care, either at the facility or in the community. They apply to all women attending antenatal care, in delivery, postpartum or post abortion care, or who come for emergency care, and to all newborns at birth and during the first week of life (or later) for routine and emergency care. This guide is a guide for clinical decision-making. It facilitates the collection; analysis, classification and use of relevant information by suggesting key questions, essential observations and/or examinations, and recommending appropriate research-based interventions. It promotes the early detection of complications and the initiation of early and appropriate treatment, including time referral, if necessary. Correct use of this guide should help reduce high maternal and perinatal mortality and morbidity rates prevalent in many parts of the developing world, thereby making pregnancy and childbirth safer.

The Oxford Handbook of Humanitarian Medicine is a practical guide covering all aspects of the provision of care in humanitarian situations and complex emergencies. It includes evidence-based clinical guidance, aimed specifically at resource limited situations, as well as essential non-clinical information relevant for people working in field operations and development. The handbook provides clear recommendations, from the experts, on the unique challenges faced by health providers in humanitarian settings including clinical presentations for which conventional medical training offers little preparation. It provides guidance for syndromic management approaches, and includes practical guidance on the integration of context specific mental health care. The handbook goes beyond the clinical domain, however, and also provides detailed information on the contextual issues involved in humanitarian operations, including health systems design, priorities in displacement, security and logistics. It outlines the underlying drivers at play in humanitarian settings, including economics, gender based inequities, and violence, guiding the reader through the epidemiological approaches in varied scenarios. It details the relevance of international law, and its practical application in complex emergencies, and covers the changing picture of humanitarian operations, with increasingly complicated and chaotic contexts and the escalation of violence against humanitarian providers and facility. The Oxford Handbook of Humanitarian Medicine draws on the accumulated experience of humanitarian practitioners from a variety of disciplines and contexts to provide an easily accessible source of information to guide the reader through the complicated scenarios found in humanitarian settings.

This practical handbook presents evidence-based guidelines for the identification and management of postnatal health needs. It reviews the evidence on the physical and psychological postpartum health problems experienced by women, and the primary management of these, and facilitates individualised care. The ten guidelines were developed by experts in postpartum health as part of a large randomised controlled trial and were peer reviewed by nationally acknowledged experts in each subject area. The guidelines were designed for use by midwives and incorporate criteria for referral, but will also be useful for other health professionals and for women. Leaflets presenting a summary of recommended management are held in a pocket inside the back cover, for ease of regular use.

Many patients who present to district (first-referral) level hospitals require surgical treatment for trauma obstetric abdominal or orthopaedic emergencies. Often surgery cannot be safely postponed to allow their transfer to a secondary or tertiary-level hospital but many district hospitals in developing countries have no specialist surgical teams and are staffed by medical nursing and paramedical personnel who perform a wide range of surgical procedures often with inadequate training. the quality of surgical and acute care is often further constrained by poor facilities inadequate low-technology apparatus and limited supplies of drugs materials and other essentials. the mission of the team responsible for Clinical Procedures in the World Health Organization Department of Essential Health Technologies (EHT) is to promote the quality of clinical care through the identification promotion and standardization of appropriate procedures equipment and materials particularly at district hospital level. WHO/BCT has identified education and training as a particular priority especially for non-specialist practitioners who practise surgery and anaesthesia. It has therefore developed Surgical Care at the District Hospital as a practical resource for individual practitioners and for use in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in-service training and continuing medical education programmes. the manual is a successor of three earlier publications that are widely used throughout the world and that remain important reference texts: General Surgery at the District Hospital (WHO 1988) Surgery at the District Hospital: Obstetrics Gynaecology Orthopaedics and Traumatology (WHO 1991) Anaesthesia at the District Hospital (WHO 1988; second edition 2000). This new manual draws together material from these three publications into a single volume which includes new and updated material as well as material from Managing Complications in Pregnancy and Childbirth: a Guide for Midwives and Doctors (WHO 2000). Link to the full training tool kit CD-ROM: WHO Integrated Management for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (IMEESC) Toolkit CD-ROM Surgical Care at the District Hospital is a compact but comprehensive outline of modern surgical care focusing on fundamental precepts and practical techniques. the illustrations are clear instructive and appropriate. the authors are to be commended on a much improved new edition.
