This book is chiefly intended for those who are using microbicides for the protection of materials. Another purpose is to inform teachers and students working on biodeterioration and to show today's technical standard to those engaged in R&D activities in the microbicide field. When trying to classify, or to subclassify, material-protecting microbicides according to their mode of action, e.g. as membrane-active and electrophilic active ingredients, it turned out that a clear assignment was not always possible. For that reason the author has resorted to chemistry's principle of classifying according to groups of substances (e.g. alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, esters, amides, etc.), thus providing the first necessary information about the micro bicides' properties. The description of the various groups of substances includes, whenever possible, an outline of the mode and mechanism of action of the active ingredients involved. The effective use of microbicides presupposes knowledge of their character istics. That is why the microbicides' chemico-physical properties, their toxicity, ecotoxicity, effectiveness, and effective spectrum are described in greater detail. As mentioned before, the characteristics of microbicides play an important role. They have to be suited to the intended application to avoid detrimental effects on the properties and the quality of the material to be protected; also production processes in which microbicides are used to avoid disturbances by microbial action must not be disturbed by the presence of those microbicides.

Corrosion has been largely considered to be caused only abiotically, without regard of any biological influence. However, corrosion of organic materials, metals, minerals and plastics can be strongly influenced by microorganisms, enhancing the kinetics of the corrosion processes. This book presents case histories, theoretical explanations, and methods for the detection, sanitation and prevention of biologically influenced corrosion.

The requirements of low cost, high quality and environmental/social compliance are pushing the coatings industry to develop new technologies. When designing a product for a customer, application techniques, film properties and environmental aspects must be taken into consideration from the very beginning. The XXVI FATIPEC congress, held in Dresden, Germany, September 9-11, 2002 addressed the important issues facing the paint industry: Markets & Trends - Higher Speed New Substrates & Pretreatments - More Color & Appearance Advanced Technologies - Better Eco-Efficiency Special Functions - Modern Characterization This volume of Macromolecular Symposia gathers 90 of the presentations from the congress, giving a comprehensive overview of the challenges facing the paint industry and possible solutions; "Quo Vadis-Coatings?" - Coatings-Where to now?

Microbiological Quality Assurance: A Guide Towards Relevance and Reproducibility of Inocula sheds light on the difficulties of obtaining results in the test tube that will be reproducible and relevant for a wide variety of tests. This book explores the current state of research in this area and troubleshoots the problems that may be encountered in setting up appropriate cultures. The text divides naturally into three sections-growth conditions, post-growth conditions, and applications. This book serves as a valuable resource for clinical microbiologists, pharmacologists, and anyone doing in vitro experiments.

The DECHEMA "Corrosion Handbook" provides a comprehensive collection of knowledge which is unique both in scope as well as content. Corrosion data and the chemical resistance of all technically important metallic, non-metallic, inorganic and organic materials in contact with aggressive media are covered, constituting the prime information source worldwide for the selection of materials for equipment in which corrosive media are handled or processed. Furthermore, methods of corrosion protection and prevention are also described. The influence of drinking warter (municipal) on some 250 materials and the effect of waste water (industrial) on some 800 materials constitute the contents of this fourth volume. Unrivaled in the research and evaluation of the international pertinent literature, more than 620 references to primary sources, 100 figures and 180 tables arranged by agents/environment represent the most detailed corrosion data available.
