Manda Scott has written a powerful thriller debut, the terrifying tale of a lone woman pitted against an enigmatic killer—a man who deals out death without a second thought... For Detective Inspector Orla McLeod, violence is a way of life. As a child, her own world was ripped apart by a brutal, unforgettable moment of terror. So when the Special Branch operation she is spearheading goes disastrously wrong, she will do everything she can to protect the nine-year-old boy caught in the cross fire. For Jamie Buchanan was the sole witness to an act of savagery committed in cold blood by a man rapidly becoming one of the most feared criminals in Europe. Orla and her partner, Luke Tyler, had risked their lives to infiltrate Tord Svensen’s criminal world. Together they had gone deep undercover in a Glasgow tenement to get close enough to bring him down. Then in a series of harrowing events, everything in Orla’s life would change forever. Now Orla finds herself haunted by the memory of what happened—and tormented by the guilt she feels over her own survival. What keeps her going are the promises she made to her partner Luke and to orphaned Jamie Buchanan. Jamie is the only person who’s seen Tord Svensen’s face, the only one able to ID him. Officially pulled off the Svensen case, Orla spirits Jamie away to the only place she feels safe, a lonely cottage under the shadow of a snowcapped Scottish mountain. But there will be no sanctuary for them in the Highlands. For, like Orla, the hunter who pursues them knows exactly what to do to survive. And that means putting both Orla and her vulnerable young charge in the grave.

No killer goes unpunished in this strikingly original thriller set in Kentucky horse country and featuring Cincinnati homicide detective Sonora Blair A fifteen-year-old girl and her horse have vanished from the local stable, leaving behind a splintered fence, a discarded riding boot, and blood—a lot of blood. Joelle Chauncey lived with her father and two siblings in a mobile home. Cincinnati Police Specialist Sonora Blair—who has kids of her own—knows she’s looking at a parent’s worst nightmare. The case has all the earmarks of abduction, even though it happened in broad daylight and no one seems to have witnessed a thing. Was someone after Joelle? Or were they pursuing her mare? When a body turns up at a dumpsite, the investigation becomes a hunt for a killer. As pressure mounts to solve the crime, Sonora struggles to hold everything together on the domestic and romantic fronts. Nothing can prepare her for the truth that will reverberate across many lives, culminating in more violence and unimaginable loss. No Good Deed is the 3rd book in the Sonora Blair Mysteries, but you may enjoy reading the series in any order.

These poems are the result of two events, one deeply affecting a family and friends, the other, affecting thousands of families and an entire nation. The first was the death of Tatiana Prosvirnina, a high school student who attended my English class the year before she died. At the time of her death I wrote a collection of poems to preserve her memory beyond the thoughts and feelings of those who knew her. The first part of this book contains those early poems. The second event was the attacks on the World Trade Center. My reaction to this tragedy was not one of anger, but one of dismay and sadness. To sort out my thoughts and feelings, I decided to return to the Tatiana poems, but in a very disillusioned frame of mind. This section expresses my growing belief that the evolution of human society, culture, and technology is becoming increasingly dangerous and grotesque. The poems will be welcome by readers who, regardless of religion or nationality, have grown weary of decades of conflict, animosity, and confusion. The poems offer no solution to the larger problems facing the world, but only attempt to offer a spiritual response for those lovers of nature who are spiritually inclined.

***Now available for preorder: KILL 'EM ALL, the stunning sequel to KILL YOUR FRIENDS*** The viciously funny novel by John Niven, bestselling author of Kill Your Friends and Straight White Male. What do you do when a homeless man knows your name? How about when he turns out to be a friend you haven’t seen in twenty years? Do you treat him to a hot meal and see him on his way? Give him a wad of middle-class guilt money? Or take him in and get him back on his feet? For Alan, there’s no question – only natural that he’d want to see his old mate Craig off the streets, even if only for a few nights, and into some clean clothes. But what if the successful life you’ve made for yourself – good job, happy marriage, lovely kids, grand Victorian house (you did well out of the property boom, thank you very much) – is one that that your old pal would quite like to have too? Even if it means taking it from you? Following the divergent lives of two childhood friends, No Good Deed is a funny and painful examination of friendship, the strange currents of ambition, loathing, pity and affection that flow between people over the decades, and of men getting older as they fail and succeed.
