Praise for the first edition of Research into Practice and Research Methods for Nurses and the Caring Professions: These books provide a good introduction for the uninitiated to reading and doing research. Abbott and Sapsford provide a clearly written and accessible introduction to social research ... One of their aims is to 'de-mystify' research, and in this they succeed admirably... After reading the text and the articles in the reader, and working through the various research exercises, readers should have a clear appreciation of how to evaluate other people's research and how to begin their own. -David Field, Journal of Palliative Medicine This book, now substantially revised in its second edition, is about the appreciation, evaluation and conduct of social research. Aimed at nurses, social workers, community workers and others in the caring professions, the book is particularly focused on research which evaluates and contributes to professional practice. The authors have provided many short, practical exercises in the text, and the examples are drawn mostly from projects carried out by one or two people rather than large research teams. The clear, accessible style will make this the ideal introductory text for those undertaking or studying research for the first time. The book may be used in conjunction with Research into Practice (Open University Press), a reader of useful examples selected by the same authors.

The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles -- including limits on nurses' scope of practice -- should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Praise for the first edition of Research Into Practice and Research Methods for Nurses and the Caring Professions: "These books provide a good introduction for the uninitiated to reading and doing research. It offers carefully selected examples of research, all concerned in some way with nursing or the study of health and community care. It illustrates the kind of research that can be done by a small team or a single researcher, without large-scale research grants. The editors have chosen papers which show a great diversity of approaches: differing in emphasis on description or explanation, different degrees of structure in design and different appeals to the authority of science or the authenticity of emphatic exploration. They show the limitations typical of small-scale projects carried out with limited resources and the experience of applied research as it occurs in practice, as opposed to how it tends to look when discussed in textbooks. The chapters have been organized into three sections representing three distinct types of social science research: observing and participating, talking to people and asking questions, and controlled trials and comparisons. Each section is provided with an editorial introduction. Features: * Thoroughly revised and up-dated edition of bestselling text * New articles in line with latest trends in nursing and other practitioner research, with more stress on evidence-based practice, action research and self-evaluation * New user-friendly format * Very well-known authors in the field

This book explores contemporary issues around pregnancy and childbirth using a feminist sociological approach. Becoming pregnant and giving birth are seen here as complex social processes. The book therefore goes beyond biological accounts of pregnancy and childbirth to examine these social processes. The biological and the social are seen as linked together. Knowledge, power, identity and the body are key concepts in the book and important for understanding the relationship between the biological and social. Written in a clear, accessible style the text will assist nurses, midwives and the caring professions to use sociological ideas and theories. It is divided into four parts that look at ways of knowing, the professionals, constructing identities and women's bodies. In the conclusion the author discusses the implications of adopting a feminist and sociological approach to health care practice.

The new edition upholds the premise that knowledge about research process and design is mandatory in today's health care arena, and that all nurses and midwives need to understand research findings and their implication for changing practice. It is completely revised with many new chapters. The text has been restructured into three sections. Section 1 Research Awareness sets the scene for the importance of nursing and midwifery research and provides an overview of research theory and practice as processes. Chapters on searching for and reviewing the literature provide detailed advice for undergraduates and facilitate access to research articles online. One of the new chapters discusses ethical issues in Australia and New Zealand. Section 2 Appreciation and Application provides a detailed discussion of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods research approaches with many useful examples from the clinical area. Section 3 Conducting primary research is new and is designed to accommodate both undergraduate and postgraduate students in their research effort. Writing research proposals may be a requirement for undergraduates in their research program and postgraduates will find the information useful for undertaking a higher degree or applying for university or external funding. This final Section is also useful as a guide on disseminating and publishing conducted research findings. Combined Australian and New Zealand editorship ensures greater trans-Tasman coverage, awareness and relevance. Contributions from international luminaries are balanced by a heightened focus on research conducted within Australia and New Zealand. New edition conscientiously recognises midwifery research as related to but independent from nursing. The research process-driven approach is directed towards ‘consumers' of research, and the comprehensive coverage extends from undergraduate through to a postgraduate level of knowledge. Expanded pedagogy includes Key Terms and Learning Outcomes at the beginning of each chapter; Icons throughout that direct readers to web-based material; Evidence-based Tips, Research in Brief boxes and Points to Ponder for constant reinforcement that links evidence to practice. Integrated Tutorial Triggers with suggested answers provided and Multiple Choice Questions enable students to assess their understanding of key points. Evolve Website provides True/False questions and access to journal articles cited in the text, with additional reflective questions. Australian adaptation of Nursing Research: Lobiondo-Wood & Haber

"Nursing, everyone believes, is the caring profession. Texts on caring line the walls of nursing schools and student shelves. Indeed, the discipline of nursing is often known as the ‛caring science.’ Because of their caring reputation, nurses top the polls as the most-trustworthy professionals. Yet, in spite of what seems to be an endless outpouring of public support, in almost every country in the world nursing is under threat, in the practice setting and in the academic sector. Indeed, its standing as a regulated profession is constantly challenged. In our view, this paradox is neither accidental nor natural but, in great part, the logical consequence of the fact that nurses and their organizations place such a heavy emphasis on nursing's and nurses' virtues rather than on their knowledge and concrete contributions."-from the Introduction In a series of provocative essays, The Complexities of Care rejects the assumption that nursing work is primarily emotional and relational. The contributors-international experts on nursing- all argue that caring discourse in nursing is a dangerous oversimplification that has in fact created many dilemmas within the profession and in the health care system. This book offers a long-overdue exploration of care at a pivotal moment in the history of health care. The ideas presented here will foster a critical debate that will assist nurses to better understand the nature and meaning of the nurse-patient relationship, confront challenges to their work and their profession, and deliver the services patients need now and into the future.
