Published through the Recovering Languages and Literacies of the Americas initiative, supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation In this book of Native American language research and oral traditions, linguist John Lyon collects Salish stories as told by culture-bearer Lottie Lindley, one of the last Okanagan elders whose formative years of language learning were unbroken by the colonizing influence of English. Speaking in the Upper Nicola dialect of Okanagan, a Southern Interior Salish language, Lindley tells the stories that recount and reflect Salish culture, history, and historical consciousness (including names of locales won in battle with other interior peoples), coming-of-age rituals and marriage rites, and tales that attest to the self-understanding of the Salish people within their own history. For each Okanagan Salish story, Lyon and Lindley offer a continuous transcription followed by a collaborative English translation of the story and an interlinear rendition with morphological analysis. The presentation allows students of the dialect, linguists, and those interested in Pacific Northwest and Interior Plateau indigenous oral traditions unencumbered access to the culture, history, and language of the Salish peoples. With few native speakers left in the community, Okanagan Grouse Woman contributes to the preservation, presentation, and—with hope—maintenance and cultivation of a vital indigenous language and the cultural traditions of the Interior Salish peoples.

The cemetery night watchman finds the body and calls the police who in turn call Del Coltrane, the 33-year-old funeral director of Henderson’s Funeral Home. Although Del isn’t used to murder, he’s used to death, so initially this is just another corpse. But after the victim is identified as a local teen long thought to be a runaway, Del is pulled into the case as a favor to the tough-as-nails 15-year-old niece of the dead girl. The Government must show how the excellent medical care being delivered to injured service personnel will continue long after the memory of the Afghan Operation fades. This report, which gives praise to the first class medical treatment provided for the Armed Forces, questions whether the support for injured personnel will be sustainable over the long term. In particular, the committee is concerned about the number of people who may go on to develop severe and life-limiting, physical, mental health, alcohol or neurological problems. There is still a question mark over whether the Government as a whole fully understands the likely future demands and related costs

After writing 'I Want What They've Got' which gives a plan for all round self-improvement, I felt there was a need for a book which dealt more specifically with 'presence' and 'leadership', hence 'How You Can Command Respect And Be Loved For It' This book is for people who wish to become more assertive and more respected, and is full of exercises and tips to raise your social status. For example, in a conversation where you wish to impress, you probably agree a lot of the time which you know will generate rapport. If you disagree sometimes you will show that you have your own mind, and may stimulate more conversation. Agreement is compliance which generates rapport, disagreement generates status, careful balance is needed. People may bully you, using presuppositions to lower your status. Presuppositions are nasty put-downs which are hard to respond to quickly. Examples,'You know you can't do it!' or 'Do you realize you're letting the team down?' This book examines presupposition patterns with many exercises and examples, enabling you to respond to them quickly and effectively. If you wish to speak to a busy person you risk being nervous, speaking too quickly and losing status. You can make them WANT to hear your words, also you can use this 'being busy' phenomena to YOUR advantage! This book is full of exercises, tips, eye openers and social dynamics to change your life for the better, for ever.
