Max Weber (1864-1920), generally known as a founder of modern social science, was concerned with political affairs throughout his life. The texts in this edition span his career and illustrate the development of his political thinking on the fate of Germany and the nature of politics in the modern Western state in an age of cultural "disenchantment." The introduction discusses the central themes of Weber's political thought, and a chronology, notes and an annotated bibliography place him in his political and cultural context.

When will Albania join the EU? Will accession help Albania to achieve prosperity, stability and prosperity? What factors are helping it towards this end and what factors are holding it back? Albania and the European Union is the first book to identify and analyse Albania’s problems as it moves towards membership of the Union. The authors highlight the enormous democratic changes that have occurred in post-communist Albania as well as the many obstacles that remain. The book also examines the impact of Albanian domestic politics on potential EU membership. Albania and the European Union explains that accession to the EU is a major issue in Albanian politics, and argues that it would be a boon to the Albanian people. However, the process of reform, necessary before accession can occur, is moving very slowly, and often only after intervention from outside. Albania faces the additional challenge that opinions toward EU expansion have cooled considerably, most notably in France but also in other member countries. According to Bogdani and Loughlin, these challenges pose a difficult but not insurmountable threat to Albanian accession. These issues will not be resolved overnight - the authors do not forecast Albanian accession before 2014 at the earliest. Covering a timely and important issue, this balanced and objective assessment will be an essential resource for everyone interested in the history, present circumstances and future of the Balkans and the European Union.

Max Weber’s sociological theories of secularization have vastly influenced the study of Protestant belief. Protestant Modernity offers a multifaceted understanding of secularization within the broader context of nineteenth-century liberal Protestantism. Anthony J. Carroll reconstructs Weber’s original writings to highlight Protestant motifs, reviews current secularization theories, and settles debates about contested meanings of secularization in this volume that will be essential reading for students and scholars of theology and the sociology of religion.

Big changes have been taking place in reading in recent years. While American Society has become more visual and digital, the general state of literacy in America is in crisis, with educators and public officials worried about falling educational standards, the rising influence of popular culture, and growing numbers of non-English-speaking immigrants. But how justified are these worries? By focusing on "reading," this book takes a serious look at public literacy, but chooses not to blame the familiar scapegoats. Instead, The End of Reading proposes that in a diverse and rapidly changing society, we need to embrace multiple definitions of what it means to be a literate person.

Sir Peregrine Worsthorne, one of Britain's most influential and respected political commentators, argues that Britain's aristocracy has contributed mightily to its stability and prosperity. And yet it is being politically written out of the national story, with the result that soon there will be no hereditary peers in the House of Lords. The disestablishment of the peerage will bring cheers to the lips of many, but in this passionately argued and highly original essay, Worsthorne argues that Britain once had an upper class which was the envy of the world, and which, crucially, had built-in authority and ancestral wisdom honed over three centuries.

This book critically engages Jürgen Habermas's comprehensive vision of constitutional democracy in the European Union. John P. McCormick draws on the writings of Max Weber (and Habermas's own critique of them) to confront the difficulty of theorizing progressive politics during moments of radical state transformation. Both theorists employ normative and empirical categories, drawn from earlier historical epochs, to analyze contemporary structural transformations: Weber evaluated the emergence of the Sozialstaat with antedated categories derived from nineteenth-century and premodern historical examples; while Habermas understands the EU almost exclusively in terms of the liberal (Rechtsstaat) and welfare state (Sozialstaat) paradigms. Largely forsaking the focus on structural transformation that characterized his early work, Habermas conceptualizes the EU as a territorially expanded nation-state. McCormick demonstrates the deficiencies of such an approach and outlines a more appropriate normative-empirical model, the supranational Sektoralstaat, for evaluating prospects for constitutional and social democracy in the EU.

Max Weber is widely regarded as one of the foundational thinkers of the twentieth century. But how did this reclusive German scholar manage to leave such an indelible mark on modern political and social thought? Max Weber in Politics and Social Thought is the first comprehensive account of Weber's wide-ranging impact on both German and American intellectuals. Drawing on a wide range of sources, Joshua Derman illuminates what Weber meant to contemporaries in the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany and analyzes why they reached for his concepts to articulate such widely divergent understandings of modern life. The book also accounts for the transformations that Weber's concepts underwent at the hands of émigré and American scholars, and in doing so, elucidates one of the major intellectual movements of the mid-twentieth century: the transatlantic migration of German thought.

Max Weber is indubitably one of the very greatest figures in the history of the social sciences, the source of seminal concepts like 'the Protestant Ethic', 'charisma' and the idea of historical processes of 'rationalization'. But, like his great forebears Adam Smith and Karl Marx, Weber's work always resists easy categorisation. Prominent as a founding father of sociology, Weber has been a major influence in the study of ancient history, religion, economics, law and, more recently, cultural studies. This Cambridge Companion provides an authoritative introduction to the major facets of his thought, including several (like industrial psychology) which have hitherto been neglected. A distinguished international team of contributors examines some of the major controversies that have erupted over Weber's specialized work, and shows how the issues have developed since he wrote. The articles demonstrate Weber's impact on a variety of research areas.
